Online Shows

Any subject that is not covered in these rules will be addressed by Sorensen Park show management.  Show management's interpretation will stand as the rule.

A Horse/Rider combination may only enter two consecutive levels, Freestyle levels included, at a single competition.  Example:  Competitors may ride both Introductory and Basic/Training level OR Basic/Training level and Level one/First Level in one show, but they may NOT ride Introductory level and Level One/First Level tests in the same show.

One horse may be ridden by a maximum of two riders during the same show.  Horses may be ridden in Junior, Amateur and Open sections at the same competition, But NOT IN THE SAME CLASS, EVEN IF IT IS IN DIFFERENT SECTIONS OF THE SAME CLASS.  i.e.:  Jr, AA, Open.  Example:  A horse may be ridden by a junior in Introductory test A and an adult amateur in Introductory test B, but NOT Introductory test “A” Junior and Introductory “A” Amateur.

Equipment

Equipment and attire are simple!  Fancy, expensive clothes or tack are not necessary.

Western Dressage: Legal attire can be as simple as jeans, western type shirt and western type boots, and a cowboy hat.  An ASTM SEI approved riding helmet is also correct and does not need to be of western type.  A simple western saddle and western type bridle with a simple snaffle bit are correct and legal for ALL levels of Western Dressage.  A Hackamore (Bosal) is permitted on a horse of any age at any level.

Classical Dressage:  An ASTM SEI approved riding helmet is required.  For a schooling show both informal attire or the more formal attire (As seen in regular USEF recognized shows) are both acceptable.  Informal attire consists of:  Riding breeches, usually of white or light color, with boots, jodhpur boots with half chaps are acceptable. Shirts can be short or long sleeved.  If a show coat is worn it is recommended to also wear neckwear.  T-shirts, tank tops, or shirts that are loose/flap in the wind are not recommended.

All equipment must comply with USEF rules.

For Western Dressage classes see USEF Rulebook Western Dressage rules.  SUBCHAPTER WD-5 APPOINTMENTS WD 121, 122, 123.

For Classical Dressage see USEF rulebook Dressage DR rule 120 and 121.

Rules and Guidelines for Filming your test

  1. All videos must be filmed from the judge's point of view. (Approximately 16 feet behind the letter “C").
  2. Videos made with a mobile device need to be in “landscape mode”
  3. While not required, using a tripod will produce a better video.
  4. Minimize the use of zooming.  Keep in mind that the judge needs to see the entire arena and the letters to judge accuracy.  In a live show the horse/rider pair are about 200 feet away from the judge when they are working at the “A” end.  Zooming in for a “close up” deprives the judge of the essential ability to see the long sides of the arena and reduces the quality of the video.
  5. All videos must be filmed continuously without any breaks or edits.  Videos with breaks in filming or edited will be eliminated.
  6. All videos must be original for the show for which they are entered.  Video of rides from another show of any kind will be eliminated.
  7. JUST BEFORE THE RIDER ENTERS AT "A" ,  the PREFILLED CLASS INFORMATION SIGN must be videoed for at least 5 seconds.  Remove the sign when the ride begins.  (This can be accomplished by your assistant holding a sheet of paper with the necessary information on it about 16 feet in front of the camera.  The video needs to capture the rider and the information in the same frame).

  8. Equipment check:  After the rider has given the final salute, the rider must ride up to "G" and turn the horse so that the horse is broadside to the camera/judge to enable the judge to see and perform an equipment check.  Wait 5 seconds, then turn your horse so the judge can perform an equipment check on the other side.  Following the equipment check the RIDER MUST DISMOUNT and safely drop the bit so the videographer can film a "bit check".  (The bridle needs to be held out in the open, clear of horse and rider bodies, so the judge can clearly see the bit.)  Your video must be one continuous filming without breaks or edits from the time of entry at "A" until the equipment bit check is completed.  It is recommended that a helper with a halter and lead rope is present and assists when the bit is dropped.  This will not be considered unauthorized assistance.

 Sound

  1. All videos must have the sound turned on so that the judge can hear the normal sounds as in a live show.  For example:  the hoofbeats of the horse, sound of the horse’s breathing, birds, wind, normal arena sounds.
  2. Videos without sound will be eliminated.
  3. Videos may NOT have background music unless the ride is for a Musical Freestyle ride.
  4. A reader is allowed.  Reader must stand at "E" or "B" and may only read the movement one time.
  5. No coaching or unauthorized assistance is allowed.  Any coaching or unauthorized assistance detected on a video will be grounds for elimination.
  6. Earphones and any kind of electronic communication devices are NOT ALLOWED in videos submitted for judging.  Use of any electronic communication will be penalized by elimination.
